COACH KARSON AVILA
What made you get into martial arts?
I got into martial arts because I wanted something active to do besides lifting weights and to get back into competition after playing college football. I also wanted to be confident in defending myself and protect others.
Tell us about your journey/background/accomplishments?
Started my Martial Arts journey with BJJ at a gym call Conquer BJJ in Ada, Oklahoma. Also picked up boxing/mma at this gym, was mainly taught boxing fundamentals. Trained at Conquer for about a year, then moved back to Colorado and started training at HAMA. Wanted to focus more on striking when I first got to HAMA and have been training here for a little over a year now. Participated in 2 smokers hosted by High Altitude.
What is your goal as a coach?
My goal as a coach is to pass down current knowledge and inspire confidence in others to continue to develop their skills in striking, I understand the hardships that come with starting something new and challenging and want to help keep others in continuing their journey. I also seek to learn and improve my own skills from the other more experienced coaches so I can also grow in my confidence as a Striking coach.
What makes High Altitude Martial Arts special?
I believe that the values/organization that has been established and the people at HAMA is what makes it special. When I first joined, everyone was friendly and welcoming to me. I have been able to build great friendships at this gym. I also really like the shirt ranking/promotion system for striking. Something I never seen from other gyms. It definitely gave me a lot of motivation to keep coming back to train. I knew I had to get to orange shirt in order to Tech Spar so it helped me push myself to get to that level.
