Introducing Ladies Only No Gi BJJ

Hey ladies! We have a new and exciting class just for you! Come try Brazilian Jiu Jitsu with other females with all ability levels from various academies across the Denver area. This is a great way to get introduced to the wonderful word of BJJ.

The class will be held on Saturdays from 9am-10am with brown belt, Coach Kerry Mosher.

A little about Coach Kerry:

How long have you been training BJJ?

Eight years.  I started when I was 33 years old.

What got you into martial arts?

I joined a cardio kickboxing class after moving to a new town to try and meet people and to get healthy.  I enjoyed hitting mitts and bags, and the class gave me confidence I was lacking.  The gym closed about six months into my training and so I had to find another gym.  I was looking specifically for kickboxing programs and found a female-owned MMA gym that offered Muay Thai classes.  My first day there, I showed up early to meet the owner and when I walked in, there were all these handsome men rolling around on the ground in their pjs.  I was intrigued.  The guy teaching the BJJ class was also the Muay Thai coach so he invited me to try the BJJ class the next day.  I immediately became a “gym rat”.  I was training 6 days, 10 hours a week.  I found a sense place through community, competition, self-awareness/growth, and ability.

You are new to Colorado, where did you move from?

I grew up in upstate New York, northern Dutchess County, but moved to Colorado from Torrington, Connecticut.  There were lots of variables that lead to a big change in perspective on life for me resulting in the move. I also wanted to be closer to one of my brothers and his family, who are here.

Did the higher elevation affect you? 

For sure!  It was weird, though.  Initially, I didn’t think I felt much difference but then a week in I started to feel it took more effort to do things.  Heavy breathing came on much faster than “normal”, and it took longer for my heartrate to recover.  The first time I really felt it was when I did the Mini Incline in Castlerock.  It is 200 steps to the top and it felt like 200 steps to death.  Being here for just over six months, I still feel it here and there.

Fun facts about Coach Kerry :

  • She is the 2016 IBJJF PAN AM No Gi Female Blue Belt Super Heavy Champ
  • She has been to thirty of the US’s fifty states
  • She coached the Girls’ Varsity Golf team for four years at The Hotchkiss School.  In the first year, they had a record of 2 wins and 16 losses, and were 2nd to last in the league.  In her final year, we were undefeated with a tie and second in our league.
